Topic: Rock Climbing

We had a good turn out of participants at the Quarry on Tuesday evening (19 Jan 2010) and a number of possible trips (day and weekend trips) and suggestions were discussed for further regular climbing over the summer. I have decided to regularly update potential trips, amend trip details, travel and venue changes etc via this Bulletin Board. Please check for trip and venue updates via here before each outing. (Note: I tend to work late at night so I suggest you check in the mornings for late night updates!).

Re: Rock Climbing

Two Rock Climbing trips were proposed on Tuesday evening (19th Jan) and I am now confirming/amending these outings:

Outing 1 - SUNDAY 24th January - Ti Point.
I will not be able to make this trip due to other demands before I go away next week so I am going to cry off on this occasion. However I am happy to facilitate anybody who is interested in joining others for a session at Ti Point on Sunday afternoon. I can supply route notes and have available Club ropes and gear for hire if any one is interested.  Dave Braddock is a keen starter and has climbed there recently. Contact me via the Bulletin Board or email (link below) or mobile 021 859 829.

Outing 2 - TUESDAY Evening 26th January - Mt Eden Quarry (short side), off Normanby Road - 6.00pm
Same as this week. We should be able to have 3 or 4 ropes in action and I will obtain some harnesses and other Club gear to enable people to do more climbing and less sharing - a nominal $2/person hire fee will apply to cover rope hire etc. I have relocated some of my 'lost gear' and the forgotten route notes so hope to be better organised. Suitable for all climbing grades including lead climbing, but we will have several top ropes in place. Contact me for further information.

Climbing - Tuesday Evening 26th January from 6.00pm - Mt Eden Quarry (Short side), off Normanby Road (behind the playing fields).

The weather forecast looks favourable! I have some additional harnesses so we should be able to set up 3 or 4 ropes. Bring climbing shoes, harness and helmet if you have them, otherwise turn up and we can hopefully fit you out with the important bits! I have one pair of spare climbing shoes (size UK8.5) and a small size UK3.5 (for sale) available to borrow, so you will need sports shoes/sneekers if you do not have shoes.

Look forward to seeing you Tuesday evening. We will adjourn to the Cadrona Speights Ale House for a drink/food/talk afterwards (from about 8.30pm - 9.00pm)

Re: Rock Climbing

We had another great evenings climbing last Tuesday 26th January. A smaller group but several attendees managed great climbs that exceeded their initial expectations! Well done!

Next Tuesday evening is Club Night so there will be no climbing organised by me that evening.

I am currently in the Wairarapa enjoying the wonderful weather and admiring the profile of the Tararuas in all their glory. The weather for tramping on the tops for the last two days has been excellent. I am hoping it lasts for me to undertake a solo trip up onto the tops around MacGregor/The kings on Saturday evening.

Enroute to the Wairarapa I travelled down via South Wharepapa and stopped for coffee at Bryce's Cafe. Ended up staying too long talking to Bryce but I was astounded by the range of climbing gear currently in stock. Bryce showed me some of the latest climbing gear which is probably 50% of the weight of my gear for the same 22kN performance! So anyone considering buying new Rock Climbing equipment should seriously consider a trip to Bryces's (www.rockclimb.co.nz) - 2.25 hours from Auckland and a great place for climbing of all grades.

Re: Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing - Thursday Evening, 4th February, Mt Eden Quarry (Long side), approx 6.15 - 6.30pm.

Is anyone interested in climbing this Thursday evening? Call or text me (021 859 829) or email (via link below). I need someone to climb with and will only show up if I have a pre-arranged climbing partner. I have not visited this side of the Quarry before so it will be a 'learning experience'. I have the route notes in my climbing bag! As per previous nights I have Club ropes/harnesses etc for which there is a small hire charge (usually about $3/night).

Re: Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing - Tuesday 16th February, 6.00pm, Mt Eden Quarry (Short side)
We will be climbing again on Tuesday evening. All welcome. We hope to have two or three ropes in action and the climbing is suitable for all abilities. Lead climbing and trad gear available for the adventurous. I have some harnesses, helmets and other gear available for those without a full kit. I have one spare pair of climbing shoes (EUR 8.5). Climbing in sneakers is possible but not nearly as rewarding as in shoes - check-out the numerous sales around town and get a pair of shoes if you intend doing some climbing. A charge of $3/person will be payable to cover Club gear hire.
We usually finish up about 8.30 to 9.00pm and retire to the Cadrona Speights Ale House for food and a beer after climbing.
Ring or text me on 021 859 829 (or email via the link below) if you require directions or more information.

Re: Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing - Tuesday 16th February

The weather forecast suggests that it will remain overcast for the remainder of the day with the possibility of some showers. On this basis we will continue with climbing tonight and if it turns wet we will take refuge in The Cadrona and discuss all the great climbs we would have done if it had not rained!

Look forward to seeing you about 6.00pm.
