Alpine Sports Club has a range or gear and equipment for hire to club members for camping, tramping and climbing.

   

The recommended list of basic gear for a tramping trip in New Zealand includes :-

The gear list is a suggestion for beginners to tramping and reminders for others of what is necessary and what is optional if you are prepared to carry it.

  

Keep the list in a place that you can use as a check list each time you go on a trip. Best glued to some cardboard.

 

  

Day trips in bush (each member)

Small pack, Over trousers, Boots (broken in),

Torch, Waterproof parka, Spare fleece or wool jersey,

Lunch, Whistle, Woollen hat and gloves,

Shorts, Drink, Matches.

  

Leader has in addition:-

Stove and fuel, Map and compass, First aid kit,

Cord and pocket knife, Paper and pencil, Emergency Shelter bag.

  

Overnight trip in bush (each member)

Woollen hat, Shorts, Wool socks (2 pairs),

Bowl, Water bottle, Personal first aid kit,

Underwear, Tee shirts, Map Compass and survival kit,

Sleeping bag liner, Groundsheet or sleeping mat, Personal medication,

Woollen gloves, Boots (broken in), Waterproof parka,

Torch (& reserve batteries), Whistle, Cord and pocket knife,

Long trousers, Toilet paper, Light over trousers,

Fleece or Woollen bush shirt/jersey, Mug, Knife, fork, spoon

Sleeping bag, Watch, Toilet gear, Towel,

Matches in waterproof container, Pack (approx 70 litres) with plastic liner).

  

Party Gear

Tent and/or fly, Stove and fuel, Paper and pencil,

Pegs and poles, Polipad, Party first aid kit,

Map, compass and permits, Billies and hooks, Detergent.

The Club will conduct Alpine courses based at the mountain huts during the winter or provide activities to use the skills learned during earlier courses. There will be opportunities to see the correct use of all of these items. Participants will require suitable warm clothing and sleeping bag. There is a variety of terrain on the Pinnacles and higher slopes of the mountain to practice on.

 

Most of this equipment can be used for rock climbing during the Summer as well. Although the Club has no instruction for this currently, guidebooks are available for a number of areas within 10 minutes to four hours drive from Auckland.

CLUB LIBRARY

The Club maintains a small library at 5 Challinor Crescent, Mt Albert. Members may borrow books by contacting Bev Williamson, telephone 846-0694, where arrangements can be made to visit the library. The books marked with * are held at the Manukau Public Libraries Central Reference Unit in Ronwood Avenue, Wiri. They can be consulted in the Central Reference Reading Room, but can not be taken home. They are labelled inside their front covers as donated by the Alpine Sports Club Inc.
