Accidents do happen from time to time. When they do it is a relief to be in a strong party that has the right gear and knows what to do. That is one good reason (of many) to join a club.

Helen slipped on a steep section of track from Plateau Road and broke her leg about a kilometer from Upper Whirinaki Hut. The party was carrying a mountain radio and an EPIRB personal locator beacon. Cellphones don't work here.

Lake Colenso.

The maori name of Kokopunui, refers to the presence of native fish, and eels, in the lake and thus its significance as a source of food.

From an ecological point of view this remote lake has significant value. There are no introduced weeds or fish in the lake and the surrounding swampy basin is the only area of lowland podocarp forest found in the Ruahine Range. This podocarp forest and the surrounding red beech forest provide a habitat for more than twenty species of native birds including whio and kaka.
